Sneak Peek of the Week ~ Charity Quilts

I'm linking up this week at Studio JRU for...

Jennifer, of Studio JRU, hosts a weekly link up for creative individuals to share, wherever they might work, whatever they have been working on that week. This week, I was able to spend at little time in the room where I sew. Surprisingly, I accomplished more than I originally thought I would. I enjoy sewing as a creative outlet and am truly enjoying quilting more and more.

I finished one quilt in its entirety this week.

After completing the above quilt, I decided to start working on my Charity quilts. You can read more about them here. I originally planned to finish one top and chose to make the Eye Spy pattern first. I had the pieces cut and ready to go Wednesday and then finished the top in about 1 hour. It's a very simple pattern and I like it a lot...so I'm thinking of using it myself very soon!

This is my favorite of the three that I chose!

I began work on a second quilt, but didn't get very far, as my children were home from school. I had the row strips sewn together.

I was able to spend time sewing in the evening and finished it up, not as quickly, due to the fact that I had a date with my seam ripper for about 15 minutes. =OP It's a 9 Patch pattern and you can download simple patterns on the Quilts for Kids website.

This was actually more work than the first quilt and I'm not quite as happy with it. It's still nice though. =)

Finally, I was either crazy or ambitious and decided to start the last quilt which was a Rail Fence. I think this would be my least favorite. A couple of the strips provided weren't cut accurately, so I had to include my own...which was fine, I just don't have much in the line of kids fabrics. The yellow is my contribution...I think the quilt would've looked better without my having to do that.

It's still cute and I'm sure it will be loved...it's just not right...I know it, such is life...I'll get over it. =)

That's my week. I won't be sewing anymore this weekend...I'll be cleaning and then cooking for our church instead. I'm looking forward to having this opportunity, it's something I used to do full time and I do enjoy making a nice meal.

Wordless Wednesday - Or Not?!?!

And...

A Finish! (original post here) Here's where I get wordy....oops! =) I wanted to line quilt this and used the blue tape down the center of each row. This was a first experience for me...it worked okay, but as it's not very sticky, it wasn't always staying where I wanted it too. In the end I used some pins to keep it still. Then I quilted on both sides of that tape. I also quilted on both sides of the seams. I'm happy with the outcome. My backing was from Joann Fabric's Clearance at $2 a yard(I know some of you don't like their fabric, but honestly, I find a LOT of nice thick cotton on the clearance racks) and I used Kona in Grey for the binding, which I machine stitched...I prefer this method for speed. The quilt was washed and dried, as I used basting spray and you know how that smells. =)

Thoughts On Peace

I was working this morning, editing a message from a couple weeks ago, which I missed whiledropping my husband at the airport for his trip to Dominican Republic. The message was on the thought of Peace.

One specific point was very interesting to me. Here's the excerpt from that message....

"God wants to give you peace. What does peace do? Ephesians 2:14 says, 'For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us'….I know that this is speaking of the Jews and the Gentiles, but it was quickened to me that it is also between people.

It may be that there is someone who is antagoinistic toward you...there’s a wall between you...there’s a wall of offenses between you and you cannot be united. He is our peace and the peace of God will break down that wall of partition, brick by brick so that you can be united and at unity with your brother or with your sister. It says in the book of Proverbs that when our ways please the Lord, He makes even our enemies to be at peace with us."

As I can totally relate to being in this situation, over a long period of time, I was reminded afresh today to pray that God would bring His peace. I don't want anything to keep His presence from my heart and life; His peace from my home. I will continue to do my part, as the Lord has already long ago quickened to me. I will trust Him to do the rest of the work.

Weekend Sewing and Thank You!

My goal for 2012 is to begin working some projects from my stash. Some of the fabric has been won in giveaways, other fabrics I've bought, but whatever the case, I'm on a mission to make a few things this year from my stash. I am going to venture a guess that most everything I make will find a new home...which is okay...I enjoy the process and more importantly, I really enjoy giving things away. =)

At the beginning of the year I pulled out a bundle of fat quarters that I'd purchased at a yard sale this summer. It was a retired quilter's stash and there were so many GORGEOUS fabrics. I left with a bag full of beautiful designer fabrics....and only finances limited me from buying more!

The set of fat quarters I used for this quilt top was by Michael Miller from the Poppy Collection in gray and green. I needed three other fat quarters, as the quilt top required nine. I had an almost 1/2 yard cut of a coordinating green and then I had just recently won a couple of grey fat quarters in a giveaway from Quilt Taffy, so they worked perfectly for the top.

The pattern I used can be found at Sew Lux Fabric and Gifts Blog and it's called Tifton Tiles. I knew when Chrissy first posted her tutorial that I would give it a go. Everything went well, though depending upon your FQ, the cutting can be a bit close. Most of the fabrics were not squared, but only a few were generous FQ's, so I had to be careful not to mis-cut, or I could end up short. I do have a couple pieces where the selvage edge is showing. I figured that the binding will hopefully cover that flaw.

It was challenging to place the different fabrics, and I probably didn't do the best job, but I did try. =) I think I needed another contrast color...probably from the large poppy print. However, I think it will be acceptable. =)

Before I close I wanted to say thank you. I received some lovely mail this week. One gift was from a giveaway I had won in December and long since forgotten about. Mechelle, from the Dresden Quilter, was giving away this stitchery and bundle of blue strips!

This will be fun to work up!

I feel so blessed. I'm looking forward to a very productive week. I'm not sure what I'll work on next, maybe my quilts for Quilts for Kids. I hope you have a blessed week!

January Snowfall ~

I guess this is technically the first 'real' snowfall of the New Year. We were supposed to get 4-6" and you can count 2-3" as the truly accurate amount in our area...normally we get more up here on the hill, but it doesn't seem likely. I really can't stand the exaggeration stories, so I asked my hubby, he figured it was no more than 3". Not very impressive...especially after seeing my West Coast friend's piles! =)

However, it's exactly what the kids have been hoping for. They donned their snowsuits and headed out to test their sleds. Yes, I joined them. I took a few pictures and had a couple rides myself.

One of these days we won't see the grass after a snow angel, that will be a real snow fall! Until then, we'll have to be content with this powdery, light white stuff.

Pottery Love ~

There are few things I really find myself drawn too, from a collection standpoint. I don't have a large apartment. I can't easily rearrange my furniture. There aren't large rooms to decorate and things pretty much remain the way they are, unless someone gifts me with something and I need to find a place for it. =)

However, there is one thing that makes me very happy. Yes, I can even say that I get excited over it and that is pottery. I have a small collection of pottery, mostly mugs, because they are practical and I use mugs daily.

There are a few reasons why I love pottery. First, there's the diversity. The clay is unique to each piece. The shape and size are never the same. Then you have the weight of the object...some being very dense and heavy, while others are very lightweight. Lastly, there are so many beautiful glazes or colors. I'm always in awe whenever I look at pottery and think about it's creation.

Another reason I love pottery is because of the spiritual connection. Isaiah 64:8 says,

"But now, O LORD, thou art our father; we are the clay, and thou our potter; and we all are the work of thy hand."

And Jeremiah 18:1-6 says,

"The word which came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying, Arise, and go down to the potter’s house, and there I will cause thee to hear my words. Then I went down to the potter’s house, and, behold, he wrought a work on the wheels. And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter: so he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it. Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying, O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? saith the LORD. Behold, as the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are ye in mine hand."

Wow, can you just visualize the Father working with each of our lives in an effort to make something beautiful? I see Him coming upon those flaws in our character and smoothing them out, continually working on us to make us who He wants us to be. To me, that is an immense honor.

I recently acquired two new pieces of pottery. The first piece was found at goodwill with my sister-in-law. I was in shock when I picked up this gorgeous bowl...

....and the price tag stated that it was only $.99! I have seen similar bowls for over $40+!!! I felt honored to bring it home. It will hold special treats.

Then a few weeks later, I stopped into a new shop in our town. It said it was a Thrift Store, but most of the things inside were new and the prices higher than normal thrift shops. I enjoyed looking around and checking out what they had. All the items were donated by various persons. In one corner was a huge pottery display! There were bowls, vases, and there, tucked into a corner, a solitary mug! I picked it up just to see what the price was....

...only $8!!! Merry Christmas to me....from someone. =) Look at the unique glaze pattern? I love it.

One thing I did notice is that most of my pottery has blue coloring. =) I guess I tend to like that color a lot.

Yes, I love pottery and probably have a few too many mugs, according to my hubby...but what can I say...it's beautiful!

Today my list of gifts focuses mainly upon one thing...my husband! Very early Sunday morning he boarded a plane to go on a ministry trip.

I couldn't be with him in body, but I am with him in spirit. I have long prayed for the Lord to open doors of ministry for him, because he's an excellent teacher. (He wouldn't like my saying so because he's not the type of guy to seek for recognition or worldly acclaim, but you can take my word for it, because I don't believe in stretching the truth, exaggerating or tickling people's ears. I wouldn't say he was, if he wasn't! =)

Anyway, my best friend, love of my life, father of my children and more, is spending the week in beautiful Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic!

I'm not sure if it was the fact that he told me the temps were in the 80s and I'm a bit frigid here in NY's negative degree's or what, but I decided to look for pictures of the place to see for myself.

Wow....this is BEAUTIFUL! =)

If you think of him, he'll be teaching at Ministerios Asocs Elim in the evenings, through Wednesday. I know he would covet prayers for the anointing of the Lord.

And now without further ado...my list of gifts in regards to my husband...and not entirely exclusive...but just to mention a few....

206. Faithful example - in his walk with the Lord and service to others.

209. Hard working - I won't list all the things he does here, but he wears MANY hats.

And so much more! I'm so thankful for the gift of my husband. I miss him terribly. Of course I can totally cope with his absence, by God's grace...but when you're one with someone, it's hard to be apart. I'm so thankful that he had this opportunity and I pray that God blesses his time away and makes His word fruitful. Thanks for letting me share today...it helps!

Her Stitch & Share Challenge for the month is Organization! Today on her blog she shared about how she organizes her threads.

I love her idea. She asked how we organize our threads, so I thought I'd share my organizing.

First, I want to say that about 80% of these threads I didn't pay anything for! Well, initially I did. About 3 or 4 years ago, I bought a huge sewing bundle off Craigslist. It included a sewing machine, multiple spools of thread, large thread racks, and even some fabric. I ended up reselling the sewing machine, because I didn't need it, and the sale covered the cost of the entire lot!

Here is my thread stash.

You wouldn't believe the blessing of having multiple colors of threads when you're sewing handbags for consignment. Even now, it's nice to have the variety for the small projects and quilting things that I do.

These little thread containers can be found at your local Joann Fabrics. I purchased them with 50% off coupons or sales. I can't remember the price of them...$3-5? They are great for stacking and you can just open them to see your threads all laid out in rows.

And as Chrissy asked, how do you store your threads?

Sneak Peek of the Week ~

I can't believe the week is almost over, and yet I have so many things still to do. I haven't linked up in a while, but today I wanted to link up to my friend Jennifer's blog, Studio JRU, for her Sneak Peek of the Week post!

I finished up a few things this week in my 'studio'...or rather the room where I sew. I love that Jennifer encourages us to join her Sneak Peek no matter what our studio looks like, or where it is!

I finished three gifts that will be taking a little flight this weekend.

I also managed to work on a quilt top that was given to me quite some time ago. A beautiful friend of mine pieced it and then passed it along to me. I wasn't sure what to back it with, so it sat idly by for months. I can honestly say it's probably one of my only UFO's ever...and I didn't even make it, so maybe it doesn't count? Anyway, last night I put it together and rather than quilt it, I tied it.

With her blessing, it will be donated to a local charity. Aren't those blocks beautiful!?!?!

I also joined the Paint Chip challenge that my Guild is hosting. You had to draw an envelope with a paint card in it...then the challenge will be to make a quilt no larger than 30"x30" using those colors. I was seeing a lot of fun color cards, but also a few ugly cards, and so I got up my courage and signed up. Here's my card...

I'm getting some help from my friend Chrissy from Sew Lux Fabric & Gifts Blog, owner of Sewluxfabric.com, to try and match this card to fabrics in her shop! I am hoping that she has something that will work for me. My eye is on one of her new lines, Late Bloomers, and I'm hoping that the colors match...she's checking into it for me! =)

Be sewing for Charity this year?

I joined our local Quilt Guild last year and immediately realized that the guild members were joining forces to sew up little quilts for a charity called Quilts for Kids. I wouldn't call myself a great quilter, but I knew I could sew and was happy to volunteer for a kit to make a blanket for this lovely Charity. The fabric, backing and binding were all provided for me, even cut, and compiled nicely into a gallon zip lock bag with instructions! All I needed to do was purchase batting and quilt the quilt.

It didn't take me long and it was truly rewarding to be part of the 50 quilts our guild donated last year.

This year they are at it again and I signed up for my quilt kits.

I'm excited to try three new patterns this year.

I've also been waiting for my kits to arrive so I could blog about this charity. Maybe you've never heard of Quilts for Kids prior to reading this post? I know that there are so many talented and generous quilters out there, I didn't want you to miss out on an opportunity to give! Please take a moment to visit their website and find out how you can become part of an effort to bless others in their time of need.

Maybe you have a large stash of fabric with kid friendly prints...they encourage you to make quilts from your stash for donation, too. They are especially looking for quilts for teen boys at this time. A Little Bit of This and That ~

Today was one of those days where I was busy doing a little bit of this and a little bit of that. It began with an edit. I edit audio files in real time to remove noises, slips of tongue and the like. Then I convert the files into various formats for reproduction. I spend anywhere from 4-6 hours a week doing this. After finishing, it was time for me to put away the Christmas decorations. Well, they've been put away for quite some time, but I needed to trek them four flights down to our basement storage area. After about 7 trips I was finished with my workout....and void of energy. =)

In the afternoon, I worked on the ironing pile and when I finished, I set about adding names and states to the Orange You Glad Bee Blocks I've received back thus far.

Of course I was finishing this up as the children came home from school. Our afternoon's are spent working on homework and practicing instruments. I spend about 1/2 hour working with my son on his violin practices....and no I don't play, but I have enough musical skill to work with him on timing and hitting the notes accurately, and also being diligent. It is work though. =)

After dinner, I decided that it was time to tackle a few alterations that I needed to make to some pants my son had received for Christmas. I removed the buttons and added snaps, then did simple hems in three pair. They're now ready for wear. I also hemmed a pair of pants that were a special gift to my daughter from her Aunt Dee Dee. Finally, I was ready to do something for me!

Anyone who knows me, knows that I am frequently cold. To remedy this winter long ailment, I've been hugging rice bags for years. I reheat mine multiple times during the day...I don't count, because it's quite frequently, especially when I'm sitting editing and cold. Anyway, one of my bags fell apart in the beginning of December. Rice was falling out all over the floor. =( Boohoo...I had to toss it. The other one looked very scary...okay, so it's downright gross!

Honestly, the problem was a combination of things...I chose the wrong fabric to begin with, but it doesn't help that the microwave is occasionally moist from heating something and then that gets on your rice bag or it occasionally gets heated to long...and yada...yada...yada! It still did the trick, ugly as can be, it helped to keep me warm.

Well, tonight I finally got around to making myself two new rice bags!!!!

My method is quite simple...I do this long style, because I have neck issues and you can easily drape it around your neck...and it also works everywhere else too. You simply cut a 6" wide strip of muslin the width of the fabric. Sew up both side seams and flip. I draw lines with a pencil to mark where I want to sew...sectioning off the rice helps it to stay nicely on the entire area of your neck, as opposed to falling down to the ends and hanging like a lead weight. Next I scoop about 1 to 1 1/2 cups rice into a section...depending on how many sections you have...if you have more sections, use less rice. Then I sew the seam..which can be tricky, but you can figure it out. After that I seal it off at the top.

Next I cut a piece of fabric, the width of the fabric and approximately 7" wide. I flip the one selvage edge down and sew it, then slightly overlapping the unsewn edge over the sewn, right sides together, I pin and make sure it will fit the length of the rice bag. Sew both seams. Flip and insert the rice bag and flip the end over like a sandwich bag. Then you have a washable cover. I chose a darker piece of fabric this time, so hopefully it won't look so gross as the last one.

Ultimately the old rice bag wasn't terrible, so I simply made a new cover for it and have three now! =)

And last, but not least, as I need a couple of gifts very soon, I worked on a couple wristlets. All fabrics were from my scrap boxes....pieces of fabric left from my handbag making days.

The first features Kate Spain's Fandango. I made a bag for myself from this fabric. I used a different piece on the back and also the inside, so there are a total of four prints used.

This one features some of my favorite fabrics by Sandi Henderson, Meadowsweet. The back is similar to the front floral fabric, but I incorporated another fabric in the yo-yo and also used another print in the lining.

I originally bought this fabric with myself in mind but ended up making a tote for someone else instead. I love how that bag turned out...so I thought I'd show you a picture.

Well, I have one more wristlet to make and I haven't worked on the quilting project I wanted to yet this week. I did get it pinned, but not sewn. Maybe tomorrow. =)

I had to look back through my previous posts to find the last time I'd added anything to my list of 'Gifts'. Shamefully it was all the way back in October! I can honestly say that it's not because I haven't found myself thankful for any number of things along the way, but rather that I don't always take time to list the things I'm thankful for...or rather I make posts specifically stating the things I'm thankful for, as opposed to a once a week effort. However, today I was reading through some blogs I follow and was reminded afresh of the privilege to make a list. Whether my list is long or short, there are definitely things I can be adding to it each week.

And so, to continue my list of gifts....counting from 1 to ???....

191. Warm peppermint tea as I wind down for the evening.

Today alone has been such a blessing. I am thankful that I was able to accomplish so much of my work and get a much needed nap too. God is so good and we have so much to be thankful for if we take the time to count even the little things and give thanks.

As the night draws to a close, I would like to take a moment to say thank you once again for all the lovely comments in my follower giveaway. I never imagined having over 300 followers on my little blog. After 513 posts since May of 2009, I have come to enjoy the blogging community more than I ever imagined possible. I began this blog for showcasing some of my 'creations' and also to make a place for family and friends to visit to keep up with our lives. Thoughtful Thursday ~

We have begun having morning devotions from a book entitled, Amazing Grace ~ 366 Inspiring Hymn Stories for Daily Devotions, by Kenneth W. Osbeck, this year. I realize that it is a bit advanced for my children, but we have twice completed their other devotional and I've not yet found another one to use, so this one is working for the time being. (If you have a suggestion for a devotional for children 8-12, please let me know in the comments.)

This morning, as we read, I realized the hymn was not one I'd ever heard before and yet the words were profound and encouraging. The foundation of the hymn, and in fact of our very lives as Christians, is established in the written promises of God, found in His Word. I wanted to share that hymn with you this morning in hopes that it would be an encouragement to you, as you meditate upon the Promises of God to His children.

How Firm A Foundation

How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord,
Is laid for your faith in His excellent word!
What more can He say than to you He hath said—
To you who for refuge to Jesus have fled?
“Fear not, I am with thee, oh, be not dismayed,
For I am thy God, and will still give thee aid;

After Christmas Sew Along Progress

Well, there's nothing like a batch of motivation to inspire me to complete a project! My current inspiration came in the form of an After Christmas Sew Along with Sewmuch2luv. Each week, we link up something we want to get sewn. I am planning on accomplishing a lot this month. I won't be going out much - at least that's the plan - so I should be able to get my other work done each morning and by noon have some time in the afternoon to sew before my children come home from school and my life gets busy again.

On Tuesday I linked up with the sew along and posted a picture of this pile of fabric.

It was the scraps from a quilt I had made for my sister. I had honestly planned to make her some matching runners, but motivation died out very quickly in December as the business of the month encroached upon my days.

I started working on these runners yesterday afternoon and was able to put the finishing stitches in today!

First I cut the background piece. Next I cut the shapes for the snowmen heads and added the wonder-under to fuse them to the fabric.

After that, I cut the nose and eyes by hand and fused them onto the snowmen heads. Then I used my slice machine to cut some snowflakes and fused those onto the background as well.

I sewed a 2" border strip around the main mat to frame it.

Today, I applied fusible fleece and then did all the applique sewing. Can I just say that the applique was not fun on the snowflakes!!! =) If they fall off in the wash, it's not my fault! =)

Then I had a change of plans and to simply the process, I did an envelope style backing, where I flipped it and stitched close to the edge. I stitched in the ditch around the border and did a free motion loop on the interior. I think they turned out nice. Hopefully my sister will too.

These two will be on opposite tables, so the snowmen heads are opposite.

My inspiration for the heads popping out was from a quilt I had seen on pinterest. I didn't make mine identical...but they are similar.

I've seen a couple of buttons popping up all over blogs this past week and as a curious person, I had to take a look. The first blog I visited was Rhonda's, Quilter in the Gap. Rhonda had us in stitches with her 'Hillbilly Ipad' just this Christmas. Now she's organizing an event to encourage quilters to finish up those UFO's.

I'll be honest with you, and sometimes I think I'm the only one, but I don't have a pile of UFO's laying around, waiting to be sewn. I have a personal issue with not completing things...so usually when I start something I work to get it done. However, with that said, I do have a few started projects that will qualify for the 2012 Finish-A-Long.

I'm linking up for the first quarter with these projects that will definitely be on my list of things to complete.

1. This is a secret, but I'll give you a peek...some beautiful Butterscotch and Roses fabric from Moda. I had a wonderful helper getting this all cut. We mostly used my Accuquilt Go!, with only some slight issues, and then a special triangle ruler. I will be making 6 different projects from this fabric line so stay tuned for further peeks!

2. Next I will be piecing my Orange You Glad Bee Quilt as all my blocks begin returning home to me. I'm so excited about this...and yet figuring how I want to finish it might be a challenge!

3. Lastly, is a quilt top that was given to me. It's been waiting for a backing and binding for a while. I've been planning to get it finished to donate to a local rest home, as they will play BINGO for prizes and I thought it would make a wonderful gift to give out.

These are really the only things that I have 'started', so to speak. Now if I were allowed to link up things that I'm hoping to get done this year, my list would be a mile long. I have many many projects waiting in the sidelines. I cannot link them up with Rhonda, but I did notice another button on another blog recently, so went to check that out. Karen, at SewMuch2Luv, is having her own special event to encourage crafters to continue working on those projects they might not have finished in time for the holidays! Well, let's just say that I was one of those! There are plenty of things I just didn't get around to making due to time constraints and the business of the month of December. Karen's After Christmas Sew Along is just the motivation I need to get a few extra things done.

1. I'll be working to make three Snowmen runners for my sister, to match the quilt I made her for Christmas.

I had a large amount of scraps left, so there will be plenty to make her the three runners for her end tables.

2. I picked up a book with my Christmas money and a 1/2 off coupon with patterns for charm packs, called 3 Times the Charm. There are a number of cute patterns included, but this is the first one I want to complete as a gift.

So there you have it...my link ups for these two wonderful events. Now it's off to my sewing room to get a little work done in the 1 1/2 hours before the kids get home!

I guess I'll be honest and say I was hoping that one day my blog would roll from 299 followers to 300. I had decided long ago that when the day came, I would have a giveaway. I think during the week of Christmas I was surprised to see that number change and I've been planning that giveaway ever since.

2011 in Review ~ Welcome 2012

I thought I would take a brief moment to reflect over some happenings of 2011. Yesterday afternoon, while my husband and I were driving to a distant town to have a date, compliments of my sister, we were trying to remember what things we did this past year, as it has truly gone by so quickly. I thought a look through my photos would give me further insight into a year that passed with lightning speed ~ and many happy memories.

January

This month began with a return trip from Erie, PA and a stop to pick up our newest family additions, who have been a great pleasure the entire year.

It also marked a long awaited milestone...the first missing tooth. Many have followed, as my son has become toothless this year!

I also joined our local quilting guild ~ moving out of my comfort zone and making new friends and learning new things!

February

We played in the snow a bit and built a snowdog on our way down the road and a HUGE snowman.

We also took a trip to VA so that Daddy could teach in a CMP. Chubby was a fun part of the trip for the kids.

I had forgotten that I also repainted my entire bathroom this month...which was a lot of work!

March

This month featured a special program at school, with a report and Scripture passage recitation.

Then we celebrated a special Birthday with a visit from Grandma...all the way from AFRICA!

My sweet MIL also helped me to hang wallpaper in my daughter's bedroom!

April

This month was super busy and started with a trip with Grandma. The children truly enjoyed every precious moment they had visiting with her before she returned to Africa.

Then we celebrated Easter and went on an egg hunt.

There were visits to friends home's and many birthday party's this month!

Then it was springtime!

May

In May we celebrate the beauty of God's creation...and also my birthday and our Anniversary. Both special weekends we were away ministering in Virginia at the CMP.

We worked on creating a project from a Highlights magazine.

On one of our trips to VA, we spent an extra day so that we could take a day trip to Washington, DC. What an amazing, super busy month!

June

This month marked the end of school and the beginning of our Summer Vacation adventures. I tried very hard to keep the kids busy and here you see them fishing.

We also spent some time at Lowe's doing Build n' Grow this summer!

A highlight of our month, aside from trips to the local flea market, was strawberry picking. The children and I picked together and then made strawberry freezer jam with help from Daddy!

On one of our adventures in the basement of the building...while working on a puzzle in the library, this poor fellow was found. He didn't make it, but it was quite exciting for the children to find him!

Bouquets of wildflowers were a highlight of our summer months!

July

We began this month with a trip to Erie for the 4th...it was a great week and we were busy, from the zoo to a parade and fireworks on a boat.

Daddy celebrated a special day!

We took a day trip to Darien Lake.

Finally finished our puzzle, which we started in June.

At the end of the month I cut off all my hair!

August

This month we took a trip to Kneobel's Amusement park.

We finished our Summer Reading Program with a fun day at Eldridge Park.

We also took another trip to Erie, right before the children began school, as Daddy was given the opportunity to see a Pre-season Lion's Game!

And of course, we can't forget that someone kept ripping out his teeth!

Next we started school and soccer...and our area suffered devastating flooding....what a month!

September

The month began with a trip to Michigan for David's cousin's wedding.

The children played lots of soccer games as well.

On the occasion of a missed game due to bad directions, we ended up apple picking instead!

The month ended with a special week long visit from Uncle Daniel before he returned to Africa!

October

At the beginning of the month, we were blessed with a night away to Lancaster and a visit to Sight & Sound Theater.

The children also finished up another month of soccer games.

We were gifted some tickets to see the local hockey team, the Jackals, play a game. The children enjoyed this blessing!

Then they had an open house at school and were able to show off some of their hard work!

November

We spent some time making apple chips this month.

Had fun celebrating special birthday's and going out to dinner when Uncle Jon arrived back from California.

Then we created our own dough ornaments...

and set up our Christmas Tree after Thanksgiving.

Father and Son spent some time working with Science experiments.

And yes, we're missing another tooth! At this point, two have grown in on the bottom.

December

The month began with a ministry trip to a rest home, where the children played a few songs on the piano and violin.

A highlight of the month was a weekend trip to Dickens of a Christmas!

We also had a little bit of snow.

Next up was another busy week with Birthday celebrations for a special little boy.

The children did a great job in the Sunday school's Christmas production. We had parts of Angel Gabriel and a Shepherd. They both played their instruments very well and sang nice and loudly. =)

There was lots of fun to be had at our family Christmas Eve party. The food is always amazing and the White Elephant exchange quite exciting!

Then an amazing Steak dinner and lots more gifts and Papa & Grandma's house!

And finally, to end the month, a week long visit with family.

The year is over; 2011 is forever gone. 2012 is here. There will be many more busy days, weeks, and months. I had forgotten many of the things we did this year, but knew that it was busy. Taking a moment to look through the photos I'd taken helped me to remember again.

As I was getting ready for church today, an old hymn popped into my head.

I know that He did take care of us in 2011 and I am assured that He will take care of us again in 2012. We are so privileged to serve a risen Savior and to have the assurance that He is in full control and will take care of us, because He always wants what is best for us. Sometimes when the tests and trials come, it's hard to remember that point, but deep down I know that my Father in Heaven will take care of what concerns me today.

May you find rest in Him this New Year and joy as you remember how He took care of you in 2011!

Fabric Giveaway!

Christmas Show n' Tell ~

Well, as I mentioned a few times over the past month, there was a large project I was working on that I just couldn't share....because it was a secret. I was finally able to give the gift on Christmas day...so now I can show n' tell! =)

It all began well over a year ago, as I was searching with my Sister for Snowmen quilts on etsy and ebay. We found one really cute one, but it was quite expensive, so she abandoned the idea. As she collects snowmen, I decided that I would make her a snowman quilt. I purchased the fabric shortly after deciding to make her one and then never got around to sewing it. =;P What's new!

Her birthday was approaching in October and still no quilt...just a pile of fabric in a bag and a great idea...what's that called? I know that there are UFO's...but this wasn't even in the process!!! Finally, at the beginning of November, I got out my rotary cutter. I didn't have a pattern, just a picture to work from...so I had to figure out how many blocks to make and how to make them all from my own noggin. It was a nice challenge. They were simple log cabin blocks and after the 'hard' work of cutting, the quilt top pieced together very easily. I was able to get it to the quilter right before Thanksgiving.

About three weeks later, I received the quilt back. I simply had to add the binding, then package it up for Christmas day. Here's the finished product...pictures compliments of my Sis and her hubby!

This is my first professionally quilted piece...and I learned some valuable lessons. I also tagged this quilt...which is not something I normally do. I'm glad I can finally show it...I don't know who to give credit for in regards to design, but it was a nice pattern!

Christmas Gifts for Me~

Christmas weekend was a busy flurry of activity. With places to go, things to do, and people to see, we were enjoying the fun and fellowship. I will write more about that and share pictures over the course of this week.

In a quick post this morning, I wanted to share my Christmas gifts! Some of these things I have wanted for a long time....and have been waiting for the 'perfect' price. Others were just nice treats! They all have to do with my craft, sewing!

First up, my gifts from hubby....which I found and bought, with the exception of one. =)

I received a little tote for my Slice. I've been keeping an eye on this tote forever...and Slice had a sale on it, plus free shipping...so a $49.99 tote cost me less than $20 with the bonus roller! =)

Then I received a rolling tote for my sewing machine! Love it!

My loving husband went to two stores on Black Friday to find this for me! That's what I call love! He hates shopping, so it means a lot.

Next up is an extension table for my sewing machine. I do more quilting now than handbags, so I have wanted one of these for quite a while. I also found a couple quilting feet to use.

Thanks again dear, this should come in handy with my upcoming projects!

Last but not least, on the crafty side, I received a beautiful gift in the mail from a friend. I love it and wow, she did an amazing job!

Isn't this just adorable! There's a place for scissors, a spool of thread, needles, embroidery floss and other necessities! I think it's just perfect! I love the binding too! Thank you Rebecca! Gorgeous!

This is not an all inclusive post of the gifts I was blessed with this Christmas...there were definitely others, from very generous individuals. I am always amazed at the generosity of others at Christmas! I'm so thankful for the many blessings and gifts I received. These were just my 'sewing' treasures...and for a quick post, I thought I would share!

A Christmas Survey & Wish ~

A Holiday Survey

I saw these questions on my cousin's blog and thought it would be fun to answer them.

25 Questions: Holiday Style
Eggnog or hot chocolate?
Both! I like certain brands of eggnog - not all are created equal....and I like an occasional cup of hot chocolate...but would rather have coffee.

Does Santa wrap presents or just sit them under the tree?
We've never embraced the tradition of Santa in our home. I did however hear a great Adventure in Odessey the other night and it told the story of St. Nicholas....very interesting!

Colored lights on tree/house or white?
The tree we have hosts colored lights...which hubby prefers...I added a couple strands of white...which I prefer. The best thing is, you can unplug the colored lights and have a white tree! =)

Do you hang mistletoe?
No, we've never done that.

When do you hang your decorations up?
We like to set up our tree the weekend after Thanksgiving, if we can.

What is your favorite holiday dish (excluding dessert)?
We don't always eat the same thing every year, however my Aunt has a Christmas Eve celebration and there are a lot of things there that are the same...I love her chicken salad on puff pastries....stuffed jalepeno's...and a few other things.

Favorite holiday memory as a child?
I remember one year a group came and took my brother and I shopping to buy gifts for our family. Then we wrapped them up. I think I was 4 or 5...but it was so exciting to be able to get them something.

What is on your Christmas wish list?
I didn't have a 'wish' list...I didn't actually want anything. However, I did see a couple things for my sewing machine that I bought...and hubby did the Black Friday thing this year and purchased me a rolling tote for my machine....so nice. (I'm ready to come to Africa, Mom!)

Do you open a gifts on Christmas Eve?
We open gifts at the party we attend. They are white elephant gifts and it's quite hilarious!

How do you decorate your Christmas tree?
I decorate my tree with two children hanging ornaments where ever they would like too. We have some small bulbs, but most of our ornaments are gifts or special heirlooms we've collected over the years. The oldest ornament is from when my husband was a baby.

Snow? Love it or dread it?
I LOVE snow...I don't like being cold. =) It's been gray and raining here and I would take snow in a heartbeat over the wet rain.

Real tree or fake tree?
We have an artificial tree this year...same one we used last year. I found it for $20 on Craigslist, so I guess that was a good buy. The children enjoy going to cut down a tree, so hopefully we'll do that again some time in the future.

Do you remember your favorite gift?
Hmm....I think one of my most favorite recent gifts was the mug my hubby bought me...it's hand cast pottery and I love pottery. Another gift I love is my electric blanket...that one was a total surprise!

What’s the most important thing about Christmas for you?
The most important thing for me about Christmas is remembering WHO it's about, Jesus Christ. I know it's not His birthday and I know that it's very commercial and that many people want to exclude Him entirely, but for me, thinking about the King of the Universe leaving His throne to come and suffer in a poor family and eventually die for me is reason enough to celebrate. I also love seeing family and friends.

What is your favorite holiday dessert?
I love so many things...Aunt Joyce's Jewel cookies(which are nearly gone), Cranberry Orange bread from my Mom, home made caramels from my Aunt Elizabeth...there are too many to list!

What is your favorite tradition?
We have the tradition of reading the Christmas story from the Bible, then singing a Carol, praying and opening our gifts. I love to hear my children singing on Christmas morning.

What tops your tree?
A lighted star from goodwill....we've had it for many years.

Do you prefer giving or receiving?
I have found that it is more blessed to give and that's where I find greatest pleasure all throughout the year. Yes, it's nice to receive gifts and feel the love from others...but I find great satisfaction in making someone else happy.

What is your favorite Christmas song?
I have a lot of those too...but I am enjoying 'Breath of Heaven' by Point of Grace.

Candy canes, yuck or yum?
I like them well enough...you can stick them in your hot chocolate or crush them up onto cookies or desserts. =)

Favorite Christmas movie?

What do you leave for Santa?
Nothing

Do you have a Christmas morning tradition?

Do you prefer to shop on-line or at the mall?
UGH....I'm so not into the shopping...but I did some of both this year...but not really at the mall. Try Target!

I tend to do Christmas cards....I do enjoy reading other's Christmas letter's though.

A Week of Giving ~

Many of you know that my husband's parents are missionaries in Malawi, Africa. They have been there for a number of years and are doing a great work, not only with a Bible school, but also in caring for orphans and widows.

Each Christmas season they have a large distribution, giving to the needs of the poor and destitute in that nation. Some of you have contributed to that effort, just this year. This morning I wanted to update you regarding the events scheduled this week and ask that you would uphold the Kropf's in your prayers during this Christmas season.

Beginning today, well, it's likely already taken place by the time you read this post, the Kropf's will be distributing corn and peas to 580 families. This would include widows and families where there is a living relative, etc.

The remainder of this week they will be giving to the Orphans. They will distribute to over 2000 orphans from Tuesday to Friday. Each orphan will receive a gift of soap, soya meat(this is a protein and they rarely if ever get protein), a jar of vaseline(for use on their dry skin - most walk barefoot), an article of clothing(dresses for the girls - some from generous fabric donations), a lollipop, cookies and nuts(their special Christmas treat). Maybe this doesn't sound like much to you, but multiply it times 2000 and you will see that it is a huge effort. These children have nothing....something children in the US really don't understand very well.

On Tuesday, 400 children are scheduled to come. On Wednesday, 650, Thursday, 500, and Friday, 500+ are scheduled to pick up their packages.

Please uphold the Kropf family in your prayers this week. Ask for fair weather, ask for order, and also that the children would be blessed. These pictures were taken in 2010. This year there are even more children and the same type of distribution. Thanks for keeping this effort in your prayers!

The Homestretch ~ to Christmas

It's hard to believe we're finally half way through the month of December! It's been so busy already...with ministry opportunities, Christmas parties, Birthday celebrations - stretching over three days, and tonight a Church play. Wow!

Now we're in the homestretch! The countdown to Christmas has begun. We have a lot of things to do this week, including a dinner engagement on Friday, a Christmas party Saturday, then Christmas day on Sunday! We'll be busy in the morning as a family, then heading off to church, then off to spend time with family.

Oh wait...we have company coming in on Monday! Yay! Didn't want to forget about that. =)

However, in the midst of this 'busy'ness...I want to reflect upon the reason for the season. It's about Jesus Christ! I'm hearing more and more that people want to remove 'Christ' from Christmas. They want it to be a 'holiday'. I guess they just want to call it, "MAS Day". Doesn't seem to make any sense, it's so sad. =(

Isaiah 9:6 says,

"For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace."

I'm so thankful that I can celebrate this wonderful gift from God to man....Jesus Christ, God's only begotten Son! I'm not ashamed to remember that the season and the reason for the season is HIM!

Take a moment to rejoice with me in the birth of the Savior of the world, Jesus Christ....

The children and I were blessed to be able to visit a local nursing home for caroling this month. They played their instruments for the residents as well. Here's a little peek at their performance.

The little lady directly behind my son was mauling him the entire time. She had him setting on her lap and then when they brought around the evening snack she was trying to feed him her ice-cream. It was quite comical. =)

A Snowy Winter Day 8 Years Ago ~

It's hard to believe that time has passed so quickly. I can remember it like it was yesterday. We had to leave our apartment on the hill that Sunday afternoon because a snowstorm was moving in and there was no guarantee we would get down the next day. I was having contractions. The midwife had said on Friday that I could go any time, but if not they would induce me on Monday morning. I spent that Sunday night shoveling snow at my parents house, hoping and praying that the baby would come soon. The night would pass with continuing contractions, but still no baby.

We headed to the hospital in the morning after dropping off our eldest to spend the day with a friend. The rest is history. No induction was needed, I was 1/2 way there upon my arrival. By 1:59 p.m. our family welcomed a precious new gift, a healthy 6lb. 12oz. baby boy!

Awe....

His name means Crowned and Beloved. He truly is a treasure.

And beautiful brown eyes...

Busy from sun up, till sundown...

Boasting a healthy appetite...

A great little brother...

Never passing up an opportunity to show a critter lovin'....

They say a picture is worth a thousand words and looking back through the eight years of your life has brought back many wonderful memories. I knew the first time I felt you moving that you would be a busy little boy. You haven't stopped moving since that day. You are full of energy and life!

You truly are a gift from God. We can see Him in you and know that He is shaping you into exactly who He wants you to be. As the future continues to unfold, it will be exciting to see where He takes you. Our prayer in this next year is that you would continue to grow in wisdom and stature and in favor with both God and man....that you would faithfully develop the gifts that He has given you and grow in the Fruit of His Spirit.

Crafty Update ~

Yes, I know, it's been a while. I've not had much sewing mojo lately...in fact, I've been so busy and sick that I've shortened my list and won't get many of my 'to-do' wish list complete. Sometimes I think we have to realize our limitations and accept that as much as we'd like to be "Super Mom" and more, it's not always possible!

However, with that said, I'll give you a peek at a few of the things I've worked on this Christmas season. I'm linking up with Sew Lux Fabric and Gifts Stitch & Share Challenge for December...maybe I'll win the prize! =)

First up is a mini quilt I made for a special friend. The pattern was in a book of Christmas quilts I own and it was a bit of applique which is not something I've done much of.

I am happy with how it turned out. It's not perfect, but I finished it. =) I was happy to receive a sweet note from this dear friend, which made me smile. There's nothing I enjoy more than surprising people and making them happy.

My reason for choosing this piece was based upon the song, "Breath of Heaven". I have a Point of Grace CD and it's one of my favorite Christmas songs. I think the song, "Mary, Did You Know", while nice, has been over used...and "Breath of Heaven" tops the list in my ears. =) You can listen to it here. This version is by Amy Grant.

I also made a Christmas table runner. I saw a cute present block on a blog and decided it would look adorable as a runner.

I had a MUST do today...

My children are in a Christmas play at church on Sunday. My daughter will play the angel, Gabriel. She needed a costume. I knew that Joann's was going to have their clearance fabric on sale for an extra 50% off last weekend, so I was there on Friday to pick up the fabric I had seen. Well, what do you know, it was gone! I looked at that area for probably 1/2 hour...looking, re-looking, being indecisive...the fabric was either too stiff, to much, too see through...sigh. In the end I found a bolt with a gold sheen. It ended up being only $2 a yard. Thankfully there was just enough on the bolt...I finished it off. I also found some nice gold rope, which I got with a 50% off coupon, and then some decorative trim, which I purchased with a 40% off coupon. Overall, the costume cost around $10-11 to make.

I'm hoping and praying that it fits! I didn't use a pattern...what's new! =) I do like the sleeves though. =) I still need to add a button to the back and pick my daughter up a turtle neck...maybe today at goodwill. =)

Lastly, I whipped up an apron for a friend. I've been wanting to make her a gift for a while, she's just a sweet spirited young woman. She's helped me out these past few months and there's nothing nicer than working with people who aren't lazy or whining all the time. =)

Hopefully the print's not too wild for her. I like it though. =) One of the great things about the dark color is that you won't notice stains if it gets any...well, unless they're from bleach!

So that's a little bit of what I've been up too.

Christmas Tree ~ Past

I was thinking again about another year of Christmas and our 'little' tree. It was a year when all my desires and natural tendencies were thrown to the wind and I decided to give my children the privilege of decorating the tree entirely on their own....I think that in a few more years I might let them do that again!

They were just 2 and 4 1/2 at the time, but having their very own 'little people' size tree to decorate, any way they chose, was something that they were very excited about!

You can read in my previous post about the my son's second Christmas...he was one and had been climbing since around 9 months...so we had to do something drastic in regards to a Christmas tree that year. We had saved the little tree and I decided to purchase plastic bulbs and ornaments that were not breakable from the Dollar store so that the children could decorate the tree themselves.

I did the basic preparation of set up, lights and garland, then let the kids go to work.

I think he's taking the ornament off the tree in this picture, hence the look of shock on his sister's face! =)

Wow...he's got some major bed head going on too! LOL. =)

I think I spent $5-$6 dollars and it was a kid friendly tree that year!

As you can see...he had to be touching....and I know he touched the whole time it was up. =)

Touch!

It wasn't big...to some it might not be pretty...but it was our special 'little' tree and that year carries many precious memories.

This is one I'd forgotten about...the memory of a little boy sliding down the slide and going face first on some crusty, icy snow! ouch! Do you see what's in his hand? Yep, an ornament! =)

Scrappy Spool Quilt Block Tutorial

*Please note, this block is not an original thought or pattern. I have created this tutorial to show you how I put together a Scrappy Spool Block and I take no credit for anything but creating the tutorial.*

Scrappy Spool Quilt Block Tutorial ~

Supplies ~

-Rotary Cutter/Mat/Ruler

-Sewing Machine/Thread

- 1/4" Foot for Sewing Machine - all seams are 1/4" -
be sure to check and make sure you are sewing 1/4", even if you're using a 1/4" foot

-Iron/Iron Board

-Scraps of coordinating fabrics

-Dark fabric for Spool

-Solid fabric for Contrast

Cut~

-Scrappy strips from your coordinating fabrics 1 1/2" to 2" wide, by approximately 10" long. The amount needed will vary based upon the size and 'wonkiness' of the strips to achieve the completed measurements.

- 4, 3" Squares of the solid contrast fabric, folded and ironed with bias of fabric along top -
see comment below on bias

- 2, 3 1/4" x 9" strips of the solid contrast fabric

- 2, 3" x 14" strips of the dark fabric for Spools

Finished block measures 13 1/2" by 14".

Step #1 ~

Attach the 1/4" Presser foot to your sewing machine. You will use it throughout the making of this block.

Step #2 ~

Begin by sewing your coordinating cut strips of fabric to each other. You will want to sew them slightly wonky, meaning that you will sew the first two strips together at a slight angle.

You can pin or just sew...I don't use pins in this process, but it's up to you.

After you finish sewing the strip, you need to use your ruler and remove the excess fabric, leaving a 1/4" seam. You can do this by lining the 1/4" line of the ruler on your sewn thread and then cutting off the excess.

You will repeat this step each time you add a new strip.

Next, press the seams together. I iron away from me, holding the bottom piece(pink) of fabric down and then ironing toward the top piece(striped). This helps to make a nicely pressed seam. Do not press the seams open, but press them all the same direction as you complete this step of the block.

Lay the next strip on top of your last strip, at an angle opposite your first wonky angle.

Sew

Trim, iron, press, repeat.

Continue this process until you have a large enough piece to cut into a 8" x 9" block.

Step #3 ~
Place the sewn piece at a slight angle on your cutting mat to create an even wonkier block - be sure to make sure that you will be able to cut an 8" x 9" rectangle. Carefully trim away the excess fabrics until your block, 8" x 9", remains.

Step #4 ~
Pin and sew your two solid contrasting 3 1/4" x 9" rectangles onto the sides of the above block, be sure to use a 1/4" seam allowance.
*It is helpful to note at this point which direction you have ironed your seams. Sew the fabrics in that direction so that the seams are being pressed under the presser foot of your machine and laying flat as they are fed under the needle, as opposed to being sewn sloppily on the back.*

Press the solid fabrics outwards from the central spool.

Step #5 ~
The next step will involve sewing the spool block ends. You will need the two dark 3" x 14" strips and the 4, 3" squares that you have cut and pressed into triangles.

*A quick note on folding the triangles...if you hold the squares of fabric in your hands at both sides and gently tug, one way will pull with a slight stretch, the other will be taut and not stetchy. The stretchy way is the bias of your fabric. If you lay the fabric out with that bias across the top and then pull the lower left corner up to meet the upper right corner and press, you will have the squares folded in the best way for this block.*

Next, line the first folded square up with the edge of the dark fabric, then open and pin.

Sew directly down the fold. Then using your ruler, line up a 1/4" seam on the thread and trim off the excess fabric.

Press the seam toward the darker fabric, which would likely be away from the small triangle portion.

Repeat the same process at the other end of the dark fabric. Be sure to place your folded triangle on dark fabric in the proper direction - to avoid any errors feel free to line it up with your spool.

(In the picture above, I had left the dark strip longer, as I was working out kinks. Your measured piece will be accurate for lining up the folded triangle at the end of the strip.)

When you've completed sewing, trimming and pressing, you're ready for the next step.

Step #6 ~
Take your spool end and line it up with your spool center, right sides together.
Your fabric edges should line up here...
***You may need to stretch the fabric a bit to line it up with the edges of the fabric, which is why it's best to sew so the bias stretch is available at this point, then pin. If you're making a block for me(OYG BEE), you WILL need to stretch the fabric, because the spool end is a little larger...it will work, just stretch, pin and sew.***
Sew with your 1/4" seam.The spool end is larger than the spool, so it looks like it has been used a little...it will not match up perfectly(see finished spool).

Sew with a 1/4" seam. Then press, away from you - toward the darker spool fabric.

Repeat for the other end.

If you've checked and your 1/4" seams were accurate, there should be little to no squaring up of this block. The finished size should be 13 1/2" x 14".

Thank You Pinked Fabrics & Pink Stitches!

A week ago I received an email, from Bonnie of Pink Stitches blog, that I had won a giveaway! She was giving away a 1/2 yard bundle of the beautiful new fabric line, Ruby, from Amy of Pinked Fabrics on Etsy. I was so excited! I've seen this fabric line around a couple of shops and on some blogs I follow, but I'm not 'buying fabric right now', so it's not likely I'd own any....except for this awesome giveaway!

A short while later Amy emailed me. I had been peeking at her etsy shop...and noticed she had Full Moon Dots in Tangerine by Amy Butler, not to mention tons of other gorgeous fabrics....ahhh, fabric is so beautiful. Then I was reminded....I'm not buying fabric, even if it was enticing. I was sending off a reply to Amy's request for my address and I mentioned seeing the lovely dots in her shop, but that I would have to pass for now. Lo and behold, a prompt reply from Amy came, offering to send me that fabric if it was what I wanted. Awe....I was totally surprised...not only did I just receive 1 1/2 yards of fabric, but this generous gal was going to let me substitute?!?!? Soooo amazing! It took me a few minutes, but I ended up deciding to take her up on the offer. =)

I got 1/2 yard of the dots...hoping it will match my fabric for my Orange You Glad Bee. I'm up in January...and I've already picked the block I'd like to make.

I had a lovely little surprise package on Thursday...

Walkin' in a Winter Wonderland ~

I was sitting here thinking about my post when I was reminded of a poem I learned in my youth..maybe you've heard it before?

It's by Robert Frost...one of my all time favorite poets...and the title is....

Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening

Whose woods these are I think I know,
His house is in the village though.
He will not see me stopping here,

On my first walk this morning, it was too dark to get any nice pictures, not to mention the batteries in my camera died. =) I decided that I wanted to go out again, into the winter wonderland. Mind you, there's only about 2.5" of snow on the ground, but it's enough to cover and it is sticking to the trees, which is the most beautiful sight. The road was a little slick as it was initially raining yesterday, then it turned over to snow. So the slush produced a nice frozen layer upon the road. If you look at this picture, someone had an exciting time going down!

I thought it was my husband, because he goes to the gym at 5:30 in the morning. However, he informed me that the tracks were not his! =)

On my second walk, I thought this view of the hills in the distance was just picturesque...

Isn't the contrast of light and dark just gorgeous?!?!?! Well, I think so!

There was even a little bit of blue peeking through...and then some rays...

Definitely a morning to bask in the beauty of His creation and enjoy a walk in a winter wonderland.

Forgiveness ~

I was looking through pins on Pinterest this morning and came across a pin my friend Ashley had pinned.

Have you ever had to do this? I have, not just once. It's not easy, that's for sure. I remember one specific time when I was prompted by the Holy Spirit to do just this. I had already apologized to this person previously, even though the situation was a result of both our faults, but things hadn't changed. There had never been true forgiveness.

So, once again I was required to humble myself and go to apologize. I was literally sick to my stomach. I didn't want to do it...I didn't think I should have to do it yet again...why was God requiring this of me...it wasn't fair...it wasn't all my fault. I did the mental rundown of the situation, but still His gentle voice said, this is what I'm requiring of you. It didn't matter all the things that this person had done to me - whether directly or indirectly - it only mattered that I had hurt them. So, I went. I did just what He was asking me to do, I told them that I was truly sorry. I asked them to forgive me again for 'whatever' I had done to hurt them. Their response was simply, "I forgive you." And then....nothing changed. Nothing got better.

Over the years this has been very difficult for me, until just this year, when I heard a message by Pastor James MacDonald called, "Have the Funeral." In that message, he addressed the hurt and pain I was feeling over the situation...partly due to my lack of letting it totally go and fully forgiving even current hurts. He even talked about when our apology isn't accepted. Then point on, as James isn't known to mince his words, he talked about my responsibility. One important point that he made was that we have to 'change our thoughts about the person.' WOW...not easy. I knew that was where I struggled most...my thoughts. Certain actions would trigger negative thoughts to arise in my heart and mind; I would remember the things done to me, instead having let them go. It was like a wound that would never heal. Our thought life is so important. Scripture even records numerous times where people's thoughts were known to God. The Holy Spirit was having to endure the thoughts I was having. Since that time, I have been working to 'change' my thoughts toward that person. Pastor MacDonald gave some helpful suggestions on how to do this, in his message.

"Forgiveness is a decision to release a person from the obligation that resulted when they injured you."

I had to release the person...according to James, I had to pay the debt that they owed to me.

Another point Pastor MacDonald made was that in order to embrace complete forgiveness, we must not bring up the hurt anymore - not to the person, not to others, and not even to ourselves. WOW, another hard thing. It is a process and I'm definitely not perfect in regards to having total victory in, but I can recognize now what is going on in my head and put a stop to the thoughts before they progress much further. When I put the points from his message into practice, I know that I am free.

My friend's pin reminded me afresh of these things that I've been meditating on for months. Whether we are the injured person or the one asking forgiveness, I think it's a good reminder to be willing to let things go. We must CHOOSE to forgive. We are never truly free if we harbor unforgiveness toward others in our hearts. It will cut us off from God and He will not forgive us. Unforgiveness is like a cancer that grows and destroys.

I'm praying today for grace to continue to walk in His truth, even when it's hard. I would highly recommend the message I referred too above, by Pastor MacDonald, "Have the Funeral", if you're struggling in this area. Counting ~ Update

Last Monday, I posted about the journey I'm on with counting calories. After a week of restricting my count to 1500 calories a day, I've gone down 4lbs. on the scale.

This is not me or my scale! =) LOL.

However, it is exciting to see some results. It's really hard to pass by delicious desserts and yummy food, but I'm finding that I am adjusting. I only have a lb. to go before my 'goal', but I will wait to see what the end result is as I continue this journey on toward Christmas Day!

This week will begin a super busy Christmas schedule week, with something to do every night, right through till next Monday. I hope that keeping busy will help with any cravings. Only two events this week are scheduled around food. One is a dinner and the other a party with cookies...so I'll have to take a large cup of herbal tea to keep me company that night. =-)

I'm not sure how much time I'll find to go to the gym, but I plan to be there at least once this week.

A Finish for Me ~

I posted a picture of a pile of fabric last week that I was hoping to make something for myself from. I can't even remember when I purchased it, but it's been in a box for quite some time just waiting to be made into something amazing!

Over a month ago, I found a tutorial on pinterest for a handbag that I thought was cute and wanted to try and make. I cut out the fabric for that bag on Friday and got all the pieces lined with their appropriate interfacing. The pattern was incorrect in one place, so I cut two 19"x10" pieces of fabric incorrectly...that was annoying. It also didn't have you cut out another piece that you needed, but that was easy enough for me to figure out.

The bag features little feet on the bottom, which is something I've never used before. I had fun figuring out how to put them on. I also didn't follow their directions for handles....so I pretty much revised that part too.

On Saturday evening, hubby graciously allowed me time to sew. I had just put the final stitches on the bag, when I realized that the lining was too big! I really don't like when the inside of a bag is big and floppy, rumpled and not nice fitting. One thing I've learned after making hundred's of bags is to make your lining slightly smaller than your exterior to avoid that issue. I didn't think about it when I was making this bag...and sure enough, I had to tear it back apart. I don't like taking things apart, but thankfully I was able to get the bottom off, cut a length of fabric off the interior and make the bottom inside just a little bit smaller. The final result is acceptable. =) I would probably use a sturdier lining in it if I ever make the pattern again.

Here's the finished product...

There was a ruffle added to the front and back of the bag in the tutorial and also on the straps, but I only added it to the front of my bag.

This is my improved interior...which due to the floppiness of the bag still looks frumpy. I added a key fob, because I always lose my keys in my purse. I also added multiple pockets...five on one side and two larger ones and a pen slot on the other. The bag hangs nicely and is cute. I still want to make a flower or something to add to the front, because it needs something. I've seen a couple tutorials that I'd like to try...so we'll see.

Dickens of a Christmas ~ Family Day

There is nothing more enjoyable then a beautiful day of fun, out, with your entire family! Today we enjoyed just such a day.

I had read in a booklet about an event a short drive away called, Dickens of a Christmas. The Main street in the town would host vendors, food and many other fun activities. We waited on the weather and when we heard that it would be a sunny day, we planned our Saturday out.

We ended up taking a shuttle from a nearby parking lot, which ended up being a bus ride, to get into town. The children enjoyed that part, as they don't often ride a bus. It was a bit nippy initially and our fingers and toes were quite cold after walking only a short way down the Main street. There were vendors selling everything you can think of ~ Christmas goodies, candles, snowmen, jewelry, knit and crochet items, woodwork, food, candy, desserts, peanut-brittle, soup, animal treats and so much more. The vendors were required to dress in period costumes - from the time when Dicken's 'A Christmas Carol' was written. It was nice to see the different costumes.

We even made a stop into the local 'Quilt & Fabric' shop...because we needed to get warm, and simply because I wanted to peek around. =) Hubby was so obliging. There was lots of lovely fabric to look at and the building was warm. After a pit stop, we headed back out into the cold. (Shockingly, I didn't buy anything. =)

Did I mention there were tons of people? You had to walk through crowds the whole length of the street. Sometimes it seemed like you were going totally against the flow. If you wanted to look at a booth you had to weave through people to get close enough. It was exciting. Half way down the street, I noticed a man dressed as Santa out in the center of the lane. I thought it would be fun for the children to get their picture taken with him. At least his beard was real. =)

Here come father and son through the crowd, as mother and daughter waited patiently for them. They wanted to stop and look at the giant candy canes for sale. (Well, DS did anyway. =)

One of the vendors had created deer out of wood. Both of the children found this to be creative art!

We walked around a bit more, sampling some peanut-brittle, and eventually deciding to buy some roasted peanuts. The children enjoyed watching the process.

After coming full circle, we decided it was time to get the children some lunch. We found a nice stand selling pulled pork sandwiches for only $3 - and DS wanted one of those. Right next door was a stand selling hot dogs for only $2, so that made DD very happy. Both children enjoyed a very nice lunch.

After finishing their lunch, we decided to visit the Episcopalian church that was right next door. The sign out front stated that they were playing a pipe organ and we thought that it would be a great experience to go inside and listen together.

It was an absolutely beautiful interior. The music was also a special treat.

The church was graciously offering hot cocoa and coffee to visitors. We were so thankful to get a warm beverage. What a blessing!

Then it was time to say goodbye. We missed the caroling and lighting of the tree at the park, but that's okay, it was nice while it lasted!

We got in line to ride the bus back to the plaza where we parked our car. When we arrived, I noticed a 'GoodWill' sign! Oh joy! I just had to go look! Hubby was totally not enjoying himself. He hates shopping...and when I suggested a couch to sit on, he couldn't stand the smell, so hurried me along. In the end, I only picked up something I need to make a quick gift. =)

Then, we headed toward home. We needed to make a stop along the way at the mall. At one point I turned around and noticed this...

Awe...someone was tired!

Not wanting to leave anyone out of photos, I decided to take a picture of the other one too. This is what I got...

She was obviously NOT tired! LOL.

We did buy two things, non-food, at the event. The first was some tarts for my warmer. Unfortunately, I've been very sick for a week. I cannot smell much of anything, so my family was left to decide on scents....I sure hope they chose wisely! At 6 for $5, I couldn't pass up the deal.

I also bought myself something. If you don't already know, I have a love for pottery. We had passed a few vendors selling pottery along our walk. Most all of it was nice...but not all pottery is created equal. Anyway, I was about to buy a mug and decided to wait until we had finished walking. Well, not one block ahead was another pottery vendor. They had the most beautiful mugs with great prices too. So here's my gift to me....I guess it's a Christmas gift. =)

It's a nice large mug in such a soft beautiful blue glaze. It's large, but not heavy and there's a lot of handle space. So that is now being added to my collection...which totals 6 hand cast mugs! Oh, did I tell you the price? Only $12 plus tax. I have never found pottery so inexpensive! This seller definitely made my day. =)

What a great way to spend an entire Saturday. I know that the rest of December is very busy for our family. We have obligations to fulfill and will be spending time with a lot of people that we love. However, this first weekend was special....we got to spend time together...and in my book, there's nothing better than that!

A New Month of Busy & A Thank You!

Wow, December 1st! I can truly say that I'm thanking God for all His many blessings this year and as this last month of the year is upon us, I'm going to enjoy each day to the fullest!

Today was one of those full days...laundry, ironing and then something extra, mending and altering.

I had quite a pile of things to make little changes too, but then a dear friend asked me to alter a few pair of slacks for her, so I was happy to get those done today.

I also wanted to share a few of the things I have been working on over the past little while.

The first, something I have had on my to-do list for weeks, was taming my bobbins! I read about this first through a link on Pinterest. The original blog post is here. All I had to do was locate the 5/8" tubing. Do you think I could find it anywhere? Nope. In the end, I wrote to my SIL and asked her to check her fish store for me. Thankfully she found exactly what I needed...I really appreciated that!

I also finished working on my ornaments for a swap I joined.

I hope my partner enjoys them. I love the vintage button eyes on the snowman...they remind me of chunks of coal.

And one of my to-do's that I have only been able to dream about so far is a new bag for the winter for me. I've had the fabric for a LONG while, so maybe I'll get around to that soon.

Of course there's some orange...but there's red too. =)

And last but not least, I wanted to write a thank you to my Secret Sister - my swap partner from my etsy team, CAC ~ Christian Artists and Crafters. We had a swap for the month of October, but only recently revealed, due to some hold ups.

Liz, from the etsy shop LadyMaysFabritique, was my swap partner. We didn't know it, but we were actually swapping with each other. She sent me so many lovely gifts. I felt very spoiled!

This is the lovely package that arrived in a box just for me.

A bundle of cinnamon sticks and some sticky notes, pens/pencils, and a fall themed pkg. of tissues...

A card holder(which Liz made) and a book of encouragement....

And my absolute favorite, a large basket in my favorite colors, orange and brown!

Normally, I will try my hand at any craft, because I can't afford to buy the items I love. However, with Liz's baskets, I wouldn't even try! I don't know where she begins or ends, but I can tell you first-hand now, they're gorgeous!

Counting ~ A Practice in Self-Control

Everyone knows what happens to our bodies in the months of November and December. We begin the 'eating spree' right around the time Thanksgiving knocks at our door. Food is so delicious. I even saw a ridiculous broadcast on 60 Minutes recently, where they were trying to blame the creators of 'food flavors' for the obesity issues in our country. Sad...everyone needs a scapegoat. Why can't we just state the facts? The reason that we have issues with our weight is mostly because we have issues with self-control. Yeah, I know this isn't a popular thought. I also know that there are exceptions to the rule, but the root cause and the 'beginning' of issues is usually self-control.

I can't believe how many invitations,activities, and responsibilities, all revolving around food, I have already received for the month of December. Whether it's a cookie exchange, a fellowship dinner, a birthday party(my own child's), and even a couple other get together's where the 'main course' is cookies, it's no surprise people gain weight in the month of December.

This year, we've decided to act before hand, instead of suffering the consequences later. We are doing calorie counting! OUCH! If you've not done this before, it's not easy. We are eating regular foods, but measuring portions and recording the amounts we eat. When we reach our designated calories for the day, we're done. Let's just say, that on the third day, I'm hungry. I'm not used to eating just 1/4 cup of this or (?)oz. of that. However, I know that this practice in self-control will be worth it in the end. I will have to pass up those cookies and cakes - do you know how many calories are in those things? I will have to pass up my favorite Starbucks Holiday drink....sigh...but it will be worth it in the end. I have a goal and I know that I am capable of doing this simple thing.

The Apostle Paul said, in 1 Corinthians 9:27, "I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection." We can have control over our bodies, they don't have to control us. We have 'lusts' that we need to conquer...the lust of the eyes...which the media feeds with its endless commercials on food, the packaging at stores, sales, bargains!!! We buy things when we are hungry and we eat more of them than we should. What would happen if we looked at that bag of chips or candy or whatever our downfall is, and said, "I don't really need that.", and walked way?

It pretty much boils down to issues with self-control. Self-control is a fruit of the Spirit. We can have it in some areas of our lives but not others. Food and eating are areas where we need to practice self-control. This is an area where I'm getting my practice right now. I may feel a little more hungry than normal, but it's only because my body is used to being in control.

Maybe you don't have any issues with food...lucky you! =) And if you do, I know how hard it is to practice self-control in this area. Before I was married I lost over 30lbs. I have managed to keep that weight off, with the exception of two pregnancies. However, I struggle sometimes with a fluctuation of 5lbs. up or down. I'd prefer to keep that number down. So honestly, I wrote this post for me....as a reminder during this long month that Christmas isn't about the food...it's about spending time with the ones we love...and we can eat in moderation! And if you're hosting a party, maybe consider a veggie tray in the midst of all those cookies!

Christmas Tree ~ Present

As anticipated, today was the day for putting up our tree. Let's just say that this was no small undertaking! =) Before we could do a single thing, I had to decide where we would put it and then clear out the space.

Let me explain...

Our living room is about 9x14'. There are a total of three doors(one leads into the hallway and doesn't get used and two lead from the room, into our bedroom and the kitchenette/dining area.) Our computer desk can only be moved from side to side, as it must stay on the wall where the internet cable is located. I have a couch and a recliner, a couple end tables, a filing cabinet and a tv stand. The room is very full, with anywhere from a 2' to 4' walking space in various places, but not a lot of floor space.

Normally, we remove the chair in order to accommodate a tree, however, this limits the seating for guests to a couch and it just doesn't work when you want to have company. I had another idea today, which meant a lot of rearranging and it is somewhat limiting for walking through doorways, but it should work out for the most part.

After the rearranging and cleaning(you just have to vacuum all those places you don't get too normally), it was time to take a trip down four flights of stairs to our storage area. This area is a great blessing! Not only do we store all our things there, but also some of hubby's siblings storage fits too! I located all the Christmas supplies, which included a large box of decorations and the tree box, then had the children help me carry things upstairs. It was nice to have their help.

I wanted to surprise my husband, who was out at the gym, by getting the tree up in advance. Thankfully, I was able to do so without incident and when he finally arrived home, he was totally surprised! =) After lunch we began decorating.

Our tradition is to turn on music and let the kids hang ornaments. Hubby video tapes, while I get out different ornaments and take pictures along the way.

Here he is bothering me! =) So I figured he would get tortured too.

The kids began the task of decorating the tree. I didn't use all our ornaments this year, the tree is just too small to crowd so many on...so I put some back into the storage box.

Lastly, they put out the nativity.

Our final tradition consists of Eggnog! Daddy was so thoughtful to stop at the store on his way home and buy us a quart.

Silly kids...good stuff!

So, here is what the room looks like re-arranged. I'm standing in the doorway to our kitchenette/dining area...same door you see my hubby photographed in above.

The couch and TV were on opposite walls, but had to be switched to accommodate the desk change, as the two doors at the other end of the room are not directly across from each other. The wall space the couch is on now is shorter. I also removed one end table for the month. It works though. =)

you can see the doorways on both sides of the room and the one leading into the hallway. Normally the desk is over on the left and the filing cabinet on the right. I moved the filing cabinet behind the chair for the time being. I did have to take out my regular garbage can...then I realized I need something to throw things in, so I borrowed one from where I sew and shoved it under the desk...it is annoying though. =)

There you have it...our tree is officially up and decorated! Next order of business, Christmas cards, which I've already begun working on.

Reminiscing - Christmas Trees Past

I was just changing the look of my blog and enjoying a poke through photographs of Christmas past. One thing I was reminded of is that I have no pictures from the very first Christmas my son was born. This makes me very sad. At some point during his first year of life, around 7 months, our hard drive crashed. We had a digital camera for his whole life, so most of my photos of him were digital and stored on the computer. While my husband was able to recover a number of other files, the files of my little one's growth and development, the changes and memories, were corrupted and are forever lost to me, because we had never backed up our hard drive or stored the pictures on disks.

However, I do have pictures of the next year. I wanted to share the story of our Christmas tree, when my Son was just one.

Isn't he just adorable? Drool and all...this is a one year old little machine! He was running around and climbing months before he was one...so we knew that we would have to consider a different option for a tree this Christmas.

Our apartment is small anyway, smaller back then than it is now, and so we decided to buy a simple 3 1/2' artificial tree. I had a wooden stand that I could put it up on and it would be out of reach for the little one. I didn't want to tempt him beyond what his inquisitive mind could bear. =)

I decided to tape the tree to the table before placing the skirt around it. Here's why...

He was NOT happy that I had placed the bulbs just out of his reach. Poor little guy. =) And yes, that is a safety lock on the cabinet where we kept our videos. Like I said, I had a very curious little boy!

In order to get a cute picture that year, I had to allow him the privilege of holding a bulb. It worked! =)

All things considered, it was a nice little tree. I actually miss the coordinated bulbs, beads and bows. We do a lot of any and everything now.

Tomorrow is the anticipated day for putting up our tree. We purchased a used artificial tree last year, due to time constraints and a totaled car, so we will use that again one more year.

Today we celebrate Thanksgiving in the United States. Family and friends gather together for a time of reflection and feasting. Some enjoy chatting, others watching the 'game', and some even doing other things.

Today, as I get things in order to celebrate with my family, I'm thinking of the many things I'm thankful for. This year my niece's birthday falls on Thanksgiving ~ so I'm thankful for the day that I witnessed the birth of a precious little girl!

That very same year, my Father was in the hospital, so I'm thankful that he's not there this Thanksgiving. God has blessed me with wonderful parents and I love them very much!

My elder brother is also home for the holiday. He's been abroad in service to our country for 15+ years. He is still active, but has been transferred back to NY, so we get to spend Thanksgiving with him this year! (Tomorrow is his birthday!)

I'm thankful for my husband and children. God has created our family and while there are times of learning and growing, we love each other.

I'm thankful for a great many things, which if I continue on, this post would never end. I'm thankful for family, near and far. I'm thankful for friends, near and far, close to my heart. I'm thankful for the Lord's provision for our family. I'm thankful for the sacrifice of Christ on Calvary for my redemption. I'm thankful today, even for the 5 large loads of laundry that I'm washing, because I know that my family is clothed!

So today....Thanksgiving day....

take a moment to think about all the things you're thankful for. Make a mental note. Make a sticky note. Take a minute to share around the dinner table. We have so much to be thankful for!

The Thief ~ Comparison

I've been meditating upon the thought of comparing ourselves to one another. I know that there will always be people in this world who have problems with one another based upon that one thing, comparison. In my own life, I've learned to accept that God created me to be me. He blessed me with unique gifts and talents. I don't have to try and copy the girl next to me, try to look like her, act like her, do the things that she does, copy her talents and life, because in reality my efforts would be in vain.
